The Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirls swim teams will once again head to the Albuquerque Academy Natatorium this week for a chance at state championship glory.
During Saturday’s district swim meet both the Cavemen and Cavegirls 200 medley relay teams earned state qualifying times. The boys team consists of Jacob DeMichele, Matthew Pavlik, Ty Longoria and Zechariah Char, who finished in second place with a time of 1:51.31.
The Cavegirls team of Isabella Corder, Zoe Char, Sophia Corder and Colette Dhenin won the event with a time of 1:51.93. This same foursome also took first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.19.
Three Cavegirls will swim in five individual events and one Caveman will compete in two additional races.
Senior Isabella Corder, the school record holder for the 100 backstroke, will look to close out her high school career on a high note racing again in that race in addition to the 200 freestyle where she took second place. Her sophomore sister, Sophia Corder, took first place in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Freshman Colette Dhenin finished in third place in the 200 freestyle and had a fast enough time to qualify. Dhenin also will race in the 100 freestyle after she swam a qualifying time on May 1.
Caveman senior Matthew Pavlik will swim in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly after finishing in first place in both events at district.
Due to COVID-19 the state meet will be broken up into one day of swimming per gender. The girls swim meet takes place Thursday and the boys meet takes place Saturday.
The Swim Team is led by head coach, Moranda Madero and assistant coaches Julie Swanson and LaDon Carriaga.
