New coronavirus cases increased 9.4% in New Mexico in the week ending Sunday as the state added 5,227 cases. The previous week had 4,776 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
New Mexico ranked 26th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 12.7% from the week before, with 1,031,057 cases reported. With 0.63% of the country’s population, New Mexico had 0.51% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 44 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Eddy County reported 434 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 430 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,494 cases and 154 deaths.
Within New Mexico, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Lea, Eddy and Guadalupe counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Bernalillo County, with 1,346 cases; Lea County, with 644 cases; and Eddy County, with 434. Weekly case counts rose in 24 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Bernalillo, Chaves and Sandoval counties.

New Mexico ranked 8th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 68.5% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 60.7%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.
In the week ending Sunday, New Mexico reported administering another 43,727 vaccine doses, including 26,615 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 19,352 vaccine doses, including 13,224 first doses. In all, New Mexico reported it has administered 2,586,455 total doses.
Across New Mexico, cases fell in eight counties, with the best declines in Lea, Lincoln and Luna counties.
In New Mexico, 26 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 21 people were were reported dead.
A total of 223,796 people in New Mexico have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 4,472 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 37,709,810 people have tested positive and 628,503 people have died.
