Happy Father’s Day to everyone! Thank you to all of the great dads out there and we hope you all have a very relaxing weekend. We also wish everyone a happy Juneteenth weekend and thank Dr. Nwanne, Judge Johnson and everyone with the local chapter of the NAACP for their hard work in preparing this weekend’s celebration of freedom. Juneteenth helps commemorate the end of slavery in our country and is now a national holiday. We were very happy to hear about two scholarships presented in Memory of Daniel Johnson, a very dedicated member of our community who tragically lost his life a few years ago. These scholarships are a great way to carry on Daniel’s memory.
The state’s “Red to Green” county-by-county system will officially be gone on July 1, according to a press release from the State of New Mexico. That means all businesses across the state may operate at 100 percent of maximum capacity (instead of 75 percent) and all limitations on mass gatherings will be gone. According to the state, independent of lifting the capacity limitation rules, facemasks will remain required for unvaccinated individuals and businesses may continue to require masks for employees or customers at their discretion.
Eddy County has remained consistently Turquoise for several months meaning capacity limitations have been minimal. Still, we’re very glad to have these remaining restrictions lifted, especially as we go into our Independence Day celebration, and think they are long overdue. We will continue to support efforts to provide vaccines through our weekly vaccination clinics, held every Monday at the civic center, and we will work to keep COVID-19 numbers low.
We would like to extend our condolences to the family of Bobby Fuller, who passed away on Tuesday in Texas. Funeral services took place on Saturday. Fuller was a graduate of Carlsbad High School who served in the National Guard. He married Phyllis in 1959. Bobby dedicated his life to the ministry – he served as pastor and interim pastor with numerous churches and was the chaplain at Intrepid Potash for several years. He was very well liked and respected by everyone he met and was just an all-around great person.
Thank you to Francine Hoffman, who contacted the City on Friday to let us know that she really appreciated the customer service provided by Diane Dorado, who helps run our cemetery program. We agree that Diane is a great employee and we’re proud to have her with us.
