The Carlsbad Cavegirls celebrates the first varsity win of its new head coach Matt Enloe on April 3, 2021. Carlsbad finished the season 7-3 before a COVID-19 outbreak forced the team to cancel its final game of the season.

The Carlsbad girl’s basketball season came to an unexpected end following a dominant district win against Roswell on April 27. The Cavegirls were scheduled to close out the regular season against district rival Hobbs on April 30 but a COVID-19 outbreak among the team forced Carlsbad to withdraw from the game and were not eligible to participate in the postseason due to the two-week quarantine.

Under first year head coach Matt Enloe the Cavegirls went 7-3 overall and 4-1 in district play. Two of the losses (Portales and Hobbs) came at the hands of teams that not only qualified for the postseason but reached at least the semifinals in their respective classification.

The good news for the Cavegirls is the majority of the team will return next season with the graduation of just one player: Senior guard Hasana Akinloye. The majority of the team leaders were either juniors or sophomores.

Twelve Cavegirls played at least half the games on the schedule and eight played in at least seven contests. Here’s who led the team in the categories and how these girls finished the season.
