The man killed in a New Year’s Day hit-and-run in the Northern Territory has been identified, officials said Tuesday.
David D’Lima, 23, of San Diego was killed Sunday while walking with a friend on Pacific Coast Highway in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO). Deputies were called to Highway 101 shortly before 12:30 a.m. after receiving a report of an accident involving two pedestrians

“A vehicle was traveling westbound on Encinitas Boulevard approaching Coast Highway 101 when a man was traveling northbound crossing Encinitas Boulevard,” SDSO Sgt. Jeremy Collis said. “The vehicle struck the male and then continued westbound on West B Street and fled the area.”
D’Lima was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Tributes to D’Lima have been growing at the crash site in the days since his death. Flowers flanked cards and signs featuring photos of D’Lima, including a sign that simply said “Why?” and the years of birth and death of the 23-year-old.
It is unclear if the victim’s other companion was injured or hospitalized.
The vehicle they hit was described as a black sedan, possibly a Chrysler or Dodge, with damage to the driver’s side, according to officials.
The SDSO Traffic Division is handling the investigation and is searching for security camera footage that may have captured the vehicle that was hit.
