ENCINITAS, Calif. – A new art installation is open for viewing in Encinitas with the goal of building visually appealing and helpful infrastructure improvements throughout North County, Caltrans said Tuesday.
The design, located at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard with Interstate 5, features hand-painted tile artwork featuring various California plant and bird species. The designs’ brightly colored patterns seem to blend the city with the coast, Caltrans explained.
The facility joins a new separated bike and pedestrian path under the overpass, which Caltrans says provides safe connectivity for people on bike and on foot, improving coastal access.
This new addition is part of the Build NCC Project supported by Senate Bill 1 and TransNet funding, a voter-approved half-cent sales tax administered by SANDAG, Caltrans said. The project focuses on improving highway, rail, environmental and coastal access.
Other improvements expected as part of this project, according to Caltrans, include the creation of four miles of new Carpool/HOV Lanes, a new sound wall, community improvements in the City of Carlsbad with new bike lanes and integrated technology. The Build NCC Project is expected to be completed in 2024 with the new HOV Lanes expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.
Caltrans said its mission is to provide a safe and reliable transportation network that serves all people and respects the environment.
