Encinitas residents react to cliff collapse

 Avatar

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — In Encinitas, car-sized boulders fell to the ground as a result of a cliff collapse this week. It’s part of a dangerous trend after recent storms.

Robert Baran lives just two blocks from the collapsed cliff.

“A few days ago I was walking on the beach,” said Baran. “I noticed a new large collapse right next to Seabluffe. Very noticeable because a few days ago there was nothing there. Now there are 7-meter boulders. over there.”

Encinitas city officials say: “The outage was about 50 feet long and 6 feet high. There were no injuries as a result of the crash. Due to recent weather and high waves, the City of Encinitas and the Department of Fire and Marine Safety are conducting frequent patrols to identify any areas of concern. Currently there are no closed beaches. “

People nearby are reminded of a fatal fall in 2019 less than a mile away that left three women dead. Aries was there shortly after it happened.

“You knew it was going to happen. Look at the cliffs, they are pretty much the same from here to the new hotel there. Some sections look worse than others,” Baran said. “This section in particular feels steep to me, as if it’s waiting to fall.”

Geologists told ABC10 News that recent storms have taken a heavy toll on our coast. Rainfall washes the sand off the beaches, allowing the tides to erode the bluffs. Erosion and rain soaking into the ground facilitate the collapse of the cliffs.

So geologists say they’re not surprised to see parts of San Diego County’s cliffs falling.

People are being told to avoid Black’s Beach after Friday’s fall. Geologists are investigating the damage, and the La Jolla Trail is closed until further notice. Nothing happened to anyone. Another cliff collapsed in Pacific Beach on Thursday. No one was injured in this fall either.
