As of April, the California Secretary of State reported that 26,948,297 California people were registered to vote, which makes nearly 82 percent of the voting population eligible in the state.

Not surprisingly, there are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in the country, with 46.75 percent for the former and 23.92 percent for the latter. GOP enrollment in the country was steadily declining, a trend that showed no signs of slowing even as Republican enrollment rose at the national level in the last year.

In the 2020 election, 83.51 percent of registered voters in the county gave a voting card, up from the 2016 presidential election, when 81.46 percent of registered voters in San Diego gave a voting card. The increase was caused by a pandemic that was adopting universal vote-by-mail in California, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.

In San Diego County, voter registration rates are higher. In April, it was 82.29 percent – with 41.24 percent of voters registered as Democrats, 27.12 percent of Republicans and 3.91 percent as American Independents.

The number of voters is not expected to be high this primary season, especially without the statewide races being competitive.
