Encinitas Little League wins second straight SoCal championship

 Avatar

ENCINITAS – The Encinitas Little League All Stars baseball team scored its second straight victory Tuesday night after defeating La Mirada 17-4 in Game 3 of the Southern California Little League Baseball Championship at La Harada Heritage Park in Corona.

After losing their first tournament game to Del Rey American, the Majors home team defeated their last two opponents by double digits in the next tournament games and are one of the six remaining teams in the tournament heading into Thursday’s bracket.

The team’s 13-point victory Tuesday night followed an 11-0 victory over the Vineyard on July 25 to claim its second straight championship game. Since July 3, the All Stars have outscored their opponents, 135-22.

Overall, the Encinitas All Stars must win five games in a row to earn a trip to the western states in August, where 14 teams from around the country compete in hopes of advancing to the Little League World Series.

Earlier this month, Encinitas Little League captured the District 31 and Section 6 championships, advancing to the opening round of the Southern California tournament.

Coach Ted Haberfield said the 11- and 12-year-olds are always humble, but excited to keep playing and competing for a World Series berth.

The team has celebrated recent wins but has “let’s move on from last year’s memory,” Haberfield said.

Haberfield said the players are focused on working hard and having fun, a balance the longtime photographer hopes will make his “labor of love” — coaching.

In the dugout, Haberfield takes time between games to talk and work with his team.

“Baseball gives you a break,” Haberfield said. “So you can talk [the team] about things … and let them grow into young men.”

Encinitas Little League was founded in 1957 and is one of the oldest Little League organizations in the country.

“Encinitas Little League is very rich in tradition,” Haberfield said. “There have been a lot of good, successful teams over the years.”

The city’s Majors team has won 13 state championships and five division titles since 1960. In 2014, the Encinitas All Stars won the Southern California Baseball Championship and finished third in the tournament of the West Region in the Majors division, missing the opportunity to play in the game. World Series.

Haberfield said the one thread that binds the group is their faith.

Haberfield said: “With this group, we praise [driving] to God.” “Trust is a big part of our success.”
