The Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club recently donated $ 4,555 to the Shades of Pink Foundation California (SOPFCA), a local charity that provides temporary funding for women suffering from economic distress as a result of a diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
National breast cancer organizations often focus on research and access to health care. The goal of the SOPFCA is not so global and to address the immediate financial needs of women suffering from breast cancer treatment. The volunteer organization says 100 percent of donations remain in place to help women in San Diego County. Through the SOPFCA Fellowship and Gift Card Programs, the SOPFCA helps alleviate the financial burden on women suffering from breast cancer by concentrating on treatment and healing. About 80 percent of SOPFCA grant recipients are single or head of household. Recipients of the grant are between 29 and 84 years old, with an average age of 50 years. This means that many women who would have to retire receive treatment that can be economically and physically eliminated as a result of this horrible diagnosis.
