Encinitas Can Expect More Water After Recent Rains

 Avatar

ENCINITAS, CA – Recent rains could mean a more flexible water budget for Encinitas as state authorities have announced increased water deliveries across California.

The state will allocate additional water supplies to approximately 29 public water agencies, providing 30 percent of required water supplies after initially expecting only 5 percent delivery.

“The increase in allocation is a direct result of extreme weather in late December and nine atmospheric rivers in early January that helped fill reservoirs and significantly increase snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. The SWP’s two largest reservoirs (Oroville and San Luis) stored a total of 1.62 million acre feet of water, roughly enough to supply 5.6 million households with water for one year,” the California Department of Water Resources said in a statement.

Areas receiving additional water allocations include the Bay Area, Central Coast, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California, including the Southern California Metropolitan Water District, according to California Department of Water Resources representative Maggie Macias.

Many San Diego-area water districts have imposed severe water restrictions to handle persistent drought conditions. San Diego County was rated in a “moderate” drought as of Thursday, a slight improvement from before recent rains showed drier conditions in some areas of the county, according to the US Drought Monitor.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s June 2022 statewide order required San Diegans to further reduce water use as part of an emergency water conservation regulation. Although the region’s water supply is currently stable, areas of Northern California have been hit by a severe drought that has required everyone in the state to do their part to help reduce water use, according to San Diego County Water Authority.

Cities in San Diego County are still limited to a three-day-a-week limit for watering between 10am and 6pm. Other restrictions like not washing cars at home, washing a driveway, and not running sprinklers are still in place.

Despite promising rains, the State Department has warned San Diegans that the drought is still far from over.

“Although recent storms have been impressive, there are two months left in the rainy season and California could see a return to hot, dry conditions before April 1. Californians should continue to use water wisely to help the state adapt to a hotter, drier future and possible return of drought,” said the California Department of Water Resources.
