ENCINITAS, CA — The American Red Cross is urging the public to prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month.

“Strong climate-driven events are happening across the US,” said Sean Mahoney, regional CEO of the American Red Cross Southern California Region. “It’s important that everyone takes steps to prepare.”

The Red Cross urges people to build emergency kits, make plans, and stay informed. The organization also encourages people to volunteer, learn lifesaving skills, or donate blood or platelets. “A strong blood supply is the key to disaster preparedness and medical emergencies,” the Red Cross said in a news release.

“Be prepared to help not only your loved ones, but also your neighbors,” says Mahoney. “Join us as a Disaster Action Team volunteer, learn lifesaving skills by signing up for a first aid or CPR class, or make an appointment to give blood or platelets.”

Anyone who donates blood or platelets between September 1-18 will receive a limited edition Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last. People who donate in September will be automatically entered for a chance to win a VIP NASCAR experience, including two tickets to the 2023 race. Donors will also receive a free haircut coupon via email, courtesy of Sport Clips Haircuts.
