Eddy County’s first COVID-19 related deaths since late June were reported Thursday by the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH).
A man in his 50s and a woman in her 60s with underlying medical conditions were the 142nd and 143rd deaths attributed to the virus in Eddy County, DOH noted in a news release. No other deaths as a result of the virus were reported in New Mexico on Thursday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 4,394 people have died as a result of exposure to coronavirus, according to DOH data.
The number of persons who tested positive for the virus increased in Eddy County: thirteen new cases were reported Thursday along with 27 on Wednesday.
Eddy County had 7,101 total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday, per DOH. More than 85,000 people received COVID-19 tests and 6,801 people recovered.
Eddy County’s demographic breakdown indicated COVID-19 cases rose in the 40 to 49 population category with 1,069.

New cases remained high in Eddy County’s younger populations with 1,203 in the 20 to 29 age group and 1,272 to in the 30 to 39 category, per DOH demographic data.
The number of new cases fell in Eddy County’s older population and bottomed out at 80 in the 90 and older group, demographic figures read.
Across New Mexico Thursday, DOH announced 273 new cases and 208,243 overall.

“Every New Mexican must work together to stem the spread of COVID-19. If you are sick or unvaccinated, wear a mask when in public and around others,” DOH cited in a press release.
