In Encinitas, luxury resorts have a good atmosphere.
It’s very rare that anyone likes surfing in the first (or second, or third) time – so during the first lesson, I half expect my kids to state that they prefer to play in the warm sand than try to catch a. the waves. But both the daughter and son recently stepped back on the board, finally appearing to stand. Seeing them succeed, I broke with pride at how at home they seemed in the water.
Our private surfing lessons have been held by a team at Alila Marea Beach, a clifftop resort that opened last March in the bluffs north of San Diego. The Alila raises the bar for high-end hotels in the area: designed by Joseph Wong Design Associates, its 130 inviting rooms have granite bathrooms, Indian jute rugs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and private fireplaces. At the on-site Vaga restaurant, chef Claudette Zepeda works towards a zero-food-waste kitchen while ensuring guests eat well, with advanced dishes such as beets and coconut cream and pink peppers or mushrooms with miso and fermented oranges.
But what really impresses is how rooted the property is in the community around Encinitas, known for breaking surfing and free-wheeling spirit. Resort sources its beans from Lofty Coffee; cafe staff outfits in uniforms from sustainability-minded Vuori Clothing; and stock restaurants and handmade crafts from The Wheel. Guests can even see the city on cruisers from Electra, a bike company headquartered right on the South Coast Highway. Such local connections are not always provided, especially with large luxury-resort brands.
Says that Encinitas eating, breathing, and sleeping surfing is not excessive. Spend the morning at Swami Beach – named after Paramahansa Yogananda, who established an ashram on the cliff above – and you’ll see dozens of surfers of all ages. After hitting the waves, they will probably walk with sandy feet to Lotus Café for a burrito breakfast. Surf culture also plays a role in Alila: prints from Aaron Chang, a local photographer and contributor for decades to Surfing magazine, hang throughout the property.
Interior design team Mark Zeff Associates tapped legendary Encinitas board shaper Brian Szymanski to create surfboard-inspired wall panels that decorate The Pocket, a poolside bar. To reduce single use plastic, Alila works with the Rob Machado Foundation, founded by famous surfers and environmental activists, to offer refillable water bottles and water stations. Guests can get on their own board, like us, through a partnership with Surfin Fire surf school.

To get a real taste of this single California beach town, mingle with the locals. Encinitas-made up of five historic communities Encinitas, New Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain, and Leucadia-feels lively and booming. Surf shops, yoga studios, cafes, and faucet rooms line the main drag, including Culture Brewing and Modern Times. In Cardiff, newcomer The Waverly, an elegant all-day restaurant, is packed with people who like wild toast and Japanese eggplant. At Broad Street Dough Co., a vegan -friendly donut shop, there is often a family line out the door.
Farther to the coast in Leucadia, customers browsed the trademark fair at a boutique owned by women Thread Spun, which has a line of accessories produced by refugees who have settled in San Diego County. It’s a community where people support each other, and we’re excited to join.
