The World Junior Nature Championships begin in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, CA — The World Junior Surfing Games are set to begin Monday at Seaside Reef at Cardiff State Beach in Encinitas, surf and weather conditions pending.

The field of 24 women from nine countries and six continents includes 19-year-old Alyssa Spencer of Encinitas, who was one of 10 wild card entrants selected by the Surf League Tour and Competition.

The rest of the surfers 20 and under field consists of two qualifiers from seven WSL regions.

The 24-man field also features nine countries and six continents – two qualifiers from seven WSL regions and 10 wild cards.

This is the first junior world championship since 2019. The points for the 2021 world junior events have been rolled over to 2022, giving surfers who missed out last season another chance to qualify.

The men’s and women’s winners will receive points in the WSL Series.

The event will continue until Sunday. The cover will not be available on days when there is insufficient cotton or bad weather.
