It’s often considered the best meteor shower of the year due to the sheer number of shooting stars visible during its peak, including colorful fireballs — if you want to get the full effect, you’ll need to steer clear of streetlights for the best view.
The spectacular Geminid meteor shower peaks on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 13th and 14th, and continues until December 24th. The best views are always under dark skies, away from street lights and other artificial light, and this is especially important for this meteor shower beauty.

Expect scattered clouds overnight in Encinitas, with the waning moon rising just before 7 p.m. Wednesday Pacific time. At 72 percent brightness, it could wash out some of the meteors. However, Geminids are bright and fertile enough to still be expected to put on a good show.
The best time to see the Geminids was early Wednesday when the shower’s radiant point – the constellation Gemini – was at its highest point in the sky.

Did you miss it? Do not worry. The Geminids will continue to shoot shooting stars after the rain reaches its crescendo. And if you can’t or don’t want to stay up most nights scanning the sky for meteors and fireballs, early evening skywatchers can catch a rare ground grazer — that is, a slow, long-lasting meteor that travels horizontally across the sky.
If that’s not possible, just know that the number of visible meteors per hour drops to about 30 or 40 in the suburbs, and those in city centers will see next to nothing.
Meteors are formed when Earth, in its orbit around the Sun, passes through debris left by disintegrating comets and space rocks. The Geminid meteors fly by as Earth passes through the massive trail of dusty debris left behind by a rocky object called 3200 Phaethon. Dust and sand burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere, causing a meteor shower.
Phaethon is one of the mysteries of the universe, according to NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke.
“It is either a near-Earth asteroid or an extinct comet, sometimes called a rocky comet,” he wrote in a blog on the agency’s website. “There is another object – an Apollo asteroid called 2005 UD – that is in a dynamically similar orbit to Phaethon, prompting speculation that the two were once part of a larger body that broke up or collided with another asteroid.”
There’s more: “Most meteor showers are shed by comets when their orbits take them into the interior of the Solar System, but the Geminids may be debris from this long-ago breakup or collision. When you consider that the Geminid meteor shower has more mass than any other meteor shower, including the Perseids, whatever happens then has to be pretty spectacular.”
The first known report of the Geminid meteor shower was in 1833, when it was seen from a riverboat moving slowly down the Mississippi River. The shower then produced 10 or 20 per hour, but the Geminids have increased in intensity over the centuries as Jupiter’s gravity pulls particles from 3,200 Phaethons closer to Earth.

The Ursida meteor shower lasts from December 17 to 26 and always peaks around the winter solstice, which is December 21.
