Twenty-one schools served by nine San Diego County school districts have been selected for the 2023 California Distinguished Schools Awards program, announced by California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
The state Department of Education has named more than 350 elementary schools for the program, which resumes this year after the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended reporting of data used to select the schools. Established in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award honors exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and distinguished staff for their success in serving students.
To evaluate schools, the state Department of Education uses several measures, including data reported through the 2022 California School Dashboard, which assesses test scores, absenteeism, suspension rates, and socioeconomic data. Information from the 2022 dashboard is available at bit.ly/3CIT43x.
Schools were recognized for excellence in either closing the performance gap or exceptional student achievement. Elementary schools and middle and high schools are honored during menopause.
