Carlsbad Municipal Schools (CMS) Superintendent Dr. Gerry Washburn saw the graduation of 53 Early College High School seniors Friday at Ralph Bowyer Stadium as a sign that things were getting back to normal.

A public graduation was in doubt, Washburn said, as public schools statewide grappled with COVID-19 protocols issued by the State of New Mexico and Public Education Department. But as the State announced all counties reached Turquoise Level, the Early College High School moved forward with commencement ceremonies held outdoors.

“That was the overall goal from the very start was to make sure our seniors would be able to walk in person,” he said.

“Getting kids back in the classrooms meant were going to be able to do this.”
