Carlsbad man dead after a Saturday afternoon fatal

A Carlsbad man died Saturday afternoon during a vehicle rollover west of Carlsbad, New Mexico State Police said.

In a news release, police said Justin W. Lackey, 31, died around 1:07 p.m. when a Dodge Dakota pickup traveling west on Hidalgo Road left the roadway and rolled.

The single vehicle crash was reported on Hidalgo Road near McKittrick Road as Lackey was ejected and sustained fatal injuries, according to the news release.

Police weren’t sure why the pickup left the roadway, the release read.

Lackey was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, the news release cited.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and Lackey allegedly didn’t use his seatbelt properly at the time of the crash, police said.
