Pacific storm again whips and drenches San Diego County, and another system is on the way

The latest storms in a series of storms that are quickly turning San Diego County from green to green drenched much of the county Tuesday, whipped up hair-raising winds and created 10-foot waves that made beaches even more submerged.

And the worst may not be over yet.

The weather will be mostly clear and mild Wednesday through Friday. But the National Weather Service said it looks like a strong system could slide into Southern California this week.

“This seems important because it involves an atmospheric river,” said Dan Gregoria, a weather forecaster. “It could bring a half to 1 inch of rain on the coast and in the valleys and an inch or two in the mountains.

“With each successive storm the land becomes more saturated and prone to flooding.”

Tuesday’s storm caused rock and mud and a large sinkhole in Los Angeles. Then it slid down the coast and focused most of its energy on northern San Diego County, where winds hit 71 mph on Palomar Mountain.

Through 5 p.m., Palomar recorded 3.6 inches of rain while San Onofre, Fallbrook, Valley Center, Julian, Lake Cuyamaca, Pine Hills, Skyline Ranch and Rainbow received an inch or more – some of them raining briefly but furiously.

The system weakened significantly as it sank to the south. Encinitas recorded 0.40 inches, San Diego International Airport received 0.20 inches and Chula Vista came in at 0.15 inches.

But the city of San Diego — which saw huge waves rush across the boardwalk at Mission Beach over the weekend — took note. It put road crews on alert and stationed lifeguards at three stations to keep an eye on flooding and possible sea rescues.

“We are stopped and ready to go,” said Jose Ysea, a city spokesman.

There was a reason to be close. Recent storms have taken large chunks out of the sand in places like La Jolla and Ocean Beach. And for the second time in about a week, strong winds hit the coast, gusting up to 40 mph at Point Loma, 30 mph at Imperial Beach and 25 mph at San Diego International Airport. Winds also spread along Interstates 5 and 8.

The system was mostly moving east at 5 pm. But the swell was expected to continue to eat away at local beaches until Wednesday. And preparations were being made for the weekend storm.

“We will be fixing pot holes and checking rivers and storm water to make sure they are clear,” Ysea said.
