New COVID-19 cases in Eddy County rose over the weekend from Thursday and Friday, according to the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH).
DOH cited 59 new positive tests in Eddy County from Saturday to Monday. Eddy County was second in the State behind Bernalillo County with 232 new cases.
Eddy County had 13 new COVID-19 cases Thursday and 18 Friday, read a DOH press release.

The Carlsbad 88220 zip code ranked first in DOH’s top-10 zip codes with 44 new weekend cases. An Albuquerque area zip code was second with 38, per DOH data.
The 88220 zip code reported 4,312 total COVID-19 cases and the Artesia 88210 had 2,273 total cases, read DOH data.
As of Tuesday morning, Eddy County had 7,178 total cases and 86,306 total tests. More than 6,800 County residents recovered from COVID-19, DOH indicated.
“The high, growing COVID-19 numbers for Eddy County remain a significant concern, and they are being matched by a high number of COVID-19 related hospitalizations as well,” said Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway.
DOH noted 632 new cases around New Mexico over the weekend with 209,118 total.
Three deaths were recorded over the weekend by DOH across New Mexico. None from Eddy County, 143 people died since last year from COVID-19 in the County.
According to DOH, 4,400 people died from COVID-19 across New Mexico since the first deaths were reported last year.

DOH reminded New Mexicans to get vaccinated against COVID-19. In New Mexico, 72 percent of the population received at least one COVID-19 vaccination as of Tuesday morning.
Sixty-four percent of the State’s population had at least one portion of the vaccination, according to DOH.
Eddy County lagged behind the State as 47 percent had at one least shot and 41 percent had at least two shots.
Vaccinations were available at the Carlsbad Public Health Office Monday’s from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and at the Artesia Public Health Office on Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
“We encourage everyone to take the recent uptick in positive COVID-19 cases very seriously. Vaccines are available through the DOH and at pharmacies around town,” Janway said.
As of Tuesday morning, 89 individuals were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 196,641 people recovered from COVID-19, DOH indicated.
